Africa Movie Academy Awards 2013 To Take Place Tonight In Nigeria

Glitz and glamour will be transforming the Nigerian town of Yenagoa this weekend as African stars gather to celebrate the Africa Movie Academy Awards. According to the BBC, the stars-- the most rich and famous arriving in private jets-- started arriving at the end of the week for the grand ceremony to be held on Saturday night with the theme of "Africa One."
The top-nominated film this year is South African film, Elelwani (watch the trailer here). The film is up for 11 awards, including the Best Director, Best Film and Best Actress in a Leading Role. tells the story of a young couple of starcrossed lovers whose tribal traditions get in the way of their love. The film, interwoven with magical appearances of spirits embodied in animals, is visually also arresting.
Before, Nollywood films (films that come from Nigeria) swept the competition. While two Nigerian films, "Last Flight to Abuja" (the story of a tragic plane crash that happened in 2006) and "Confusion Na Wa," have been nominated in the Best Film Category, they are also facing steep competition in the form of entries from other countries including South Africa (the nation that has proved to be Nigeria's staunchest rival and the country behind Elelwani), Kenya, Cameroon and Ghana.
This year certainly had a lot of competition. 671 films were entered in the competition!

One thing that has been stirring a lot of discussion is the chance that Nigerian actor Justus Esiri may snag a Best Actor Award... posthumously. The star was only buried last week. Fans think it would be a fantastic tribute.

Who will be the next kings and queens of Africa's rising film scene?
                       We'll see Tonight!
