World’s Fastest Electric Car Makes Global Debut

The world’s fastest electric car has made its global, public debut at the Shanghai Motor Show: the Detroit Electric SP:01 (pictured) is a two-seat pure electric sports car that can race to an incredible top speed of 155mph while travelling from 0-62mph in a staggering 3.7seconds.
It is described by Detroit Electric as “pure electric excitement”: and it seems to have captured the interest of the general public with 35 orders placed for the vehicle within one hour of it going on sale.
Its exceptional performance can largely be attributed to its superb power-to-weight ratio. It comes with a 201bhp electric motor that delivers 166lb-ft of torque; and features a lightweight battery pack and all-new carbon fibre bodywork. Its total weight is a meagre 2,354lbs helping it boast superb handling and driving dynamics.
There is no sacrifice in terms of the vehicle’s range either: it comes with an energy storage capacity of 37kWh, helping it to travel 190miles between charges. A full charge can be achieved in just 4.3hours.
According to Albert Lam, Detroit Electric’s chairman and CEO, the SP:01 is more than just a sports car.
“The SP:01 will be exclusive, luxurious and technologically advanced,” he said.
“It is a milestone in the history of the Detroit Electric brand, but also a significant development for the international EV sector. The car will allow us to demonstrate to the world our ability to build an exciting and innovative product, one that displays outstanding performance coupled with strong green credentials, and which delivers an exhilarating driving experience.”
Indeed the vehicle is packed with “green” features, such as regenerative braking that recovers kinetic energy whenever acceleration is interrupted: this is then used to charge the vehicle’s battery pack.
The Detroit Electric SP:01 comes with a 30,000mile warranty with the option to extend the warranty for the battery to 50,000miles. It will be produced in Wayne County, Michigan, at a dedicated facility with an annual capacity of 2,500vehicles.
