EFCC arrests Gov Lamido’s sons over alleged N10b fraud

Two sons of the Jigawa State governor, Aminu Sule Lamido and Mustapha Sule Lamido, were arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday night in Kano over an alleged N10 billion fraud.

Saturday Tribune gathered that the two men were arrested around 8.00 p.m. and whisked off to Abuja.
It will be recalled that Aminu was, on 11 December, 2012, arrested by the anti-graft agency at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport for illegal transfer of money totaling $50,000.

According to information gathered by the Saturday Tribune, over N10 billion is said to have been transferred from the Jigawa State government accounts into some accounts in which Sule Lamido and his two sons have interest from 2007 till date.

The commission is said to have traced these transfers to 10 companies where Lamido and sons are directors and/or signatories.

The companies include Bamaina Alluminium Limited, Bamaina Holdings Limited, Bamaina Company Nigeria Limited, Rawda Integrated Services Limited, Speeds International Limited and Saby Integrated Nigeria Limited.

But another source opined that the arrest might not be unconnected with investigations into the account of the finances of the 27 local government councils of the state.

The image maker of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, however, confirmed that two persons were arrested in Kano in connection with money laundering, but did not link it with Lamido’s children.

Aminu and Mustapha were said to have been arrested while their father, Governor Sule Lamido, a member of the G7 faction of the PDP, was away attending a state (Jigawa) economic meeting, preparatory to leaving for Sokoto to attend the factional PDP meeting.

Saturday Tribune gathered in Dutse that the governor had to suspend his trip to Sokoto and sent representative after receiving information about his sons’ arrest.

When contacted, however, the Public Relations Officer in charge of North-West zone, Mr. Idris, denied knowledge of the governor’s sons’ arrest, saying “I’m not aware of that. As I’m talking to you now, I’m on my way to Katsina. I will call you when I get the details.”

The governor’s sons’ arrest came few hours after their father (governor) granted an interview to a radio station in Abuja, where he accused a member of President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet of corruption to the tune of about N40 billion.”
