The first ever road race over hills and sandy path in Nigeria, the Okpekpe Road Race, sponsored by national telecomms operator, Globacom, kicks off on May 4 at Okpekpe, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
A statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by Globacom stated that the 10-kilometre Okpekpe Road Race is the first of its kind in the country. Globacom is the official telecoms partner of the race.

The statement added that over 4,000 athletes from African countries and beyond, including the governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole would be in the agrarian community of Okpekpe to participate in the race.
According to the statement, “Globacom is partnering with the organisers of the Okpekpe Road Race because we will always support any venture that will lead to the development of human mind’’.
Meanwhile, the Main Organising Committee (MOC) of the Road Race has confirmed that most of the invited foreign athletes for the competition are scheduled to start arriving Nigeria tomorrow (Thursday).
Director of Organisation of the race, Zack Amodu, confirmed last night that the five athletes from Ethiopia namely, Deriba Merga, Tilahum Regassa, Abere Chane Lema, Sofia Shemsu and Salam Abere Alebachew are booked to arrive Lagos enroute Okpekpe in Etsakor East Local Government Area of Edo State.
“We are also expecting Moses Masai, Yusuf Biwott, Fredrick Kipchumba, Betty Chepleting and Georgia Rono all from Kenya to arrive Lagos tomorrow enroute Benin. Also on the flight to Lagos, we are expecting Timothy Troitich from Uganda and several others,” observed Amodu.
