2014 Porsche Cayman S: 3rd generation nimble speedster hits Nigerian roads

The Porsche Cayman S is undoubtedly one of the sports cars with precision and finesse of a scalpel –a wonder that steers, brakes and attacks corners with the accuracy of a surgeon’s blade.
Completely redesigned for 2014, the new Cayman S is larger, more cosseting and more fuel efficient than its predecessor while also managing to be lighter and quicker, but yet still a big fun to drive. The current edition is the third generation of Cayman released into the market.

The third generation of Cayman, which was launched into the market by the Porsche AG in Germany on April 6, was unveiled into the Nigerian market last week by Porsche Nigeria.
With the asking price of N12,460,400, the Cayman S is set to create class and distinction for interested buyers who have the wherewithal to splash on the sport car, which is adaptable to the Nigerian road and weather.
Speaking at the unveiling, the Brand Manager, Porsche, Mr. Michael Wagner said Cayman S is essentially a fixed-roof version of the Boxster S roadster. He said a dynamic, model-specific front fascia helps set Cayman S apart ever so slightly from its drop-top sibling.
He revealed that the Cayman S is available on 2.7 litre and 3.4 litre, the base (standard) Cayman is equipped with 2.7 litre flat six engine that is mounted on a six-speed manual transmission or optional seven-speed Porsche PDK, producing 275hp with 214 Ib-ft of toque which is 10 times more than its previous model.
The stick is a slick-shifting unit that fosters a tight bond between man and machine, while the PDK has the benefit of slightly quicker acceleration and superior efficiency.
Wagner said the fuel consumption of the current model is reduced by 50 per cent while the spare parts are readily available through its multi-brand workshops spread across the country.
Since its introduction into the Porsche line-up seven years ago, the Cayman has stood out as the most entertaining and engaging sports ever.
Porsche says the all new Cayman promises to set an even higher standard based on series of modifications the automaker has added to make the car more powerful, faster and elegant than its predecessor.
Wagner said the styling of the new Cayman is evolutionary rather than revolutionary, remarking that the newcomer has been upgraded with new optional features such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ADC) for the first time. ADC controls the distance to the car ahead in traffic and the vehicle speed.
Also adding that the new Cayman comes with optional Entry and Drive Keyless system that can be factory installed.
“Though at a glance the coupe looks remarkably similar to its sleek predecessor, a closer inspection reveals it is longer and wider than before, while the sharper edged design gives the Cayman a more aggressive stance.
“Porsche has long tradition of building beautifully engineered cars and the Cayman is no exception.
The cabin is solidly screwed together while the tried and tested mechanicals are lifted straight from the Porsche Boxster and 911 Carrera”, he said.
For instance, the newly designed tailpipes of the exhaust system visually terminates at a low central point allowing the Cayman to get an oval tailpipe and the Cayman ‘S’ has two-branch dual tailpipes.
When fitted with the PDK, the Cayman can sprint from zero-to-60 mph in 4.4 seconds and return 30 mpg on the highway.
Upgraded interior
With a Panamera-inspired sloping centre console, the Cayman S’ interior is much more stylish than before and the overall design and material quality now approach luxury-car levels.
The instrument cluster remains a simple, legible three-gauge design with the tach front and centre in the best sports car tradition, while the right gauge is now 4.6-inch TFT screen that can be configured to display numerous different types of vehicle information.
Despite its handling prowess, the Cayman S is actually a fairly practical machine – it offers 15 cubic feet of cargo room, although that space is divided between a traditional rear trunk and a frunk (front-trunk) where the engine would be in a normal car.
Larger items may not fit. As with other Porsche models, the Cayman S offers a nearly endless array of interior treatments and paint schemes in addition to available luxury and convenience features.
While most other automakers offer such options as part of bundled packages – forcing buyers to sometimes pay for features they don’t want to get desired items – Porsche offers all of its extras as stand-alone features. This means that buyers can create unique, custom cars, although doing so can quickly get very pricey.
Standard and optional features
The Cayman S comes standard with A/C, power windows and locks, cruise control, a fourspeaker AM/FM/CD stereo system, Bluetooth Smartphone connectivity, partial leather upholstery, power-adjustable seat backrests (manual height and fore/aft) and 19-inch wheels.
Notable options include wall-to-wall leather upholstery, active sports seats, a Bose surround sound system, an even more impressive Burmeister surround system a navigation system with voice command functionality and a variable- ratio steering system.
Occupant safety
The Cayman S comes standard with dual front, front knee and front side head/thorax airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems and a tire pressure monitoring system
