Auto Accident: Seven Die, Eight Injured In Oyo

Seven persons have died and another eight critically injured in an accident which occurred at Sembe River at Elete village along the Oyo-Ogbomosho highway yesterday afternoon.

The accident, which happened at about 1:0pm, involved a blue Honda CRV marked (LAGOS) SMK 267 AR and a 14-seater white NISSAN VANETTE passenger bus marked (OYO) YRE 111 XA.


An eye witness told reporters that the driver of the Honda CRV coming from Ilorin in Kwara State had attempted to overtake another vehicle near the river before it collided with the passenger bus.

Men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) from Ogbomosho and Oyo units were seen by eyewitness battling with axe and other rescue equipment to remove the body of the driver of the bus and that of other passenger.

A FRSC official, who did not want his name mentioned, said that eight other injured passengers were taken to the hospital in Oyo town. The FRSC Assistant Commander in Atiba Unit, Cocker Clement Olukayode, confirmed the accident, but stressed that the seventh person among the injured victims died along the way to the hospital.

Olukayode, who attributed the accident to wrongful overtaking, said that 15 persons, including 12 males and three females were involved in the crash which claimed lives of the two drivers. He added that the injured victims were already receiving treatment at the hospital, while the bodies of the dead had been deposited at the morgue.
