Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi will today appear before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to defend the petition he wrote against the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu.
Director of Public Affairs and Communication, Mohammad Nasir Ladan, confirmed to LEADERSHIP last night that the governor will appear before the commission this morning.
The governor had, in a petition to the commission, accused Joseph Mbu, the state Commissioner of Police of human rights violation in the state.
The commission said Mbu would also be invited to respond to the allegations by the governor.
The commission, had about two weeks ago, confirmed the receipt of a petition from Governor Amaechi over allegations of deteriorating human rights situation in the state.
In the petition, the governor accused the police commissioner of exercising his duties without recourse to necessary constitutional and legal standards.
According to Amaechi, “Mr. Mbu’s mode of exercising his duties without recourse to necessary constitutional and legal standards is creating an environment rife with fear, distrust of security of security operatives and public institutions, strife, impunity, criminal behaviour and brigandage, factors which were all implicit in the build-up and escalation of the pre-amnesty Niger Delta crisis."
