Empower Us Else We’ll Return To Street Begging—Yobe Disabled Persons Tell Govt

The Joint National Association of Persons with disabilities, Yobe state chapter has threatened to return to street begging if government did not fulfil its promise to empower them.

Speaking in an interview with the state chairman of the association Alhaji Mohammed Abba Isa, he said that Yobe state government had in the past set up a committee to look into their plight with a view to stopping them from street begging and make them self-reliant, but for over one year now nothing has been heard from the government.

He said that the association with over 25,000 members spread across the state felt neglected by the government they  voted into power.

“Almost all of us are of the state ruling party the ANPP which has now changed into the APC, but we will not hesitate to defect to other political parties if our demands or plight are not  considered
“We have made several efforts to see the governor but some saboteurs are blocking us from seeing the governor and this is enough reason for any right thinking person to decide his fate, since the leadership cannot come to their rescue”.

The chairman said that the association is prepared to provide sound education to its members at all levels with the help of the state, the federal government as well as philanthropists and therefore it is imperative for government at all levels to take their plight seriously.

He emphasizes that his members as Nigerians  should not be treated differently or dehumanized because of their deformities in the sharing of the dividends of democracy.

Alhaji Mohammed Abba Issa also said government has not been taking them along in the allocation of houses on owner – occupier basis, sharing of various transportation palliatives, and skilled acquisition among others.
