World Athletics Championships – Day Eight

Day Eight at the World Athletics Champions in Moscow saw another superb performance from Usain Bolt. The Jamaican easily took his third successive world 200 metres title in the year’s fastest time of 19.66 seconds

Fellow Jamaican Warren Weir improved on his Olympic bronze by taking silver. Curtis Mitchell won bronze for the United States.

America’s new kid on the block Brianna Rollins dethroned Australia’s 100 metres hurdles queen Sally Pearson to win gold. Rollins was last out of the blocks but had drawn level with Pearson by the ninth hurdle and edged ahead over the last to win in 12.44 seconds.


In the men’s marathon, Uganda’s Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich broke Kenya’s stranglehold with victory in two hours nine minutes 51 seconds.

Kiprotich was the surprise winner at last year’s London Games but started as one of the favourites in Moscow and became the first non-Kenyan to win the title since 2005.

Meseret Defar added yet another global 5,000 metres gold to her impressive collection, winning the world title with a textbook performance.

The women’s high jump saw one of the home favourites Svetlana Shkolina jump 2.03 metres to win.
In the women’s 4 × 400 metres relay, Russia powered ahead of the United States to come in first, with Great Britain completing the podium.

In the first round of the men’s javelin, Czech Republic’s Vitezslav Vesely threw 87.17 metres. The rest of the field spent the rest of the event chasing his distance.
