The lawmaker was killed while on his way to his residence at Mabera area of the Sokoto metropolis around 9.45p.m. on Monday.
THISDAY gathered that the assassins went away with the deceased vehicle after perpetrating the heinous act.
Confirming the incident to journalists Tuesday, the state Commissioner
of Police, Alhaji Lawal Gambo, said some hoodlums on motorcycles trailed
the deceased and cornered him in a dark area at Mabera area where they
attempted to snatch his Honda car.
Gamba explained that a thorough examination of the scene of the
incident revealed that the deceased struggled with the assailants before
he was killed.
“Investigation carried out at the scene revealed that the slain
lawmaker struggled with the hoodlums when they wanted to snatch the car
as his shirt was torn, Thus, it was during the struggle that he was
killed by the miscreants,” Gambo said.
He stated that the command had already alerted surrounding states of
Katsina, Kano and Zamfara States where the miscreants might likely take
the vehicle for onward sale.
The commissioner disclosed that four empty shells were recovered at the
scene of the incident, adding that the hoodlums used AK 47 to
perpetrate the dastardly act.
He stressed that the command to this end, would redouble efforts with a view to apprehending those behind the dastardly act.
The police chief called on the public to remain calm, saying the
command was pooling its resources to ensure the protection of lives of
the citizens.
However, THISDAY learnt that the deceased was a third term member of
the Sokoto Assembly, as he was in the House between 1999 and 2003,
2007-2011, having been re-elected in 2011.
Until his death, the slain lawmaker was the House Committee Chairman on Finance and Appropriation in Sokoto Assembly.
The deceased died at the age of 46 and was survived by two wives and five children.
Meanwhile, the slain lawmaker had since been buried in accordance with
Islamic rites in Wauru village in Gada local government area of the
state.
