The
Lagos State Government, Tuesday gave cheques to five persons whose
property were taken over by the state government for the purpose of
erecting a cenotaph at the site of the Dana Air crash that occurred in
Iju Ishaga area of the state.
Although neither the government nor the victims disclosed the amount
involved in the compensation when accosted at the Lagos Lands Bureau
office where the event took place, our correspondent gathered from
sources that N20 million was earmarked by the government for the
compensation.
It was also learnt that N14 million out of the total sum was paid to the biggest owner of the five victims.
The victims are Wahab Oshinaya, Ezekiel Akin-Jesu, Ramota Akinwusi, Daniel Omowumi and Isaac Aduroja.
Presenting the cheques to the beneficiaries the executive secretary
on behalf of the government, Lagos Lands Bureau, Aina Salami, said it
was in keeping to the promise made by Governor Babatunde Fashola, that
those whose lands were taken over would be compensated.
It would be recalled that on June 3, 2012, a Dana MD 83 flight from
Abuja to Lagos, crash-landed at Iju-Ishaga, killing all passengers on
board and about four people on the ground.
The crash that left many families weeping also caused massive destruction to property where the plane landed.
The state government subsequently acquired the crash site totaling
about five plots and erected a cenotaph in memories of the about 167
persons who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident.
