Six Policemen Arrested for Killing Truck Driver

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested six of its men in connection with the killing of a driver identified as Friday Igbinedion at the weekend on the Ore-Benin Expressway.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Patrick Dukumor, who disclosed the arrest, said the police received the information at about 1 p.m. on August 9 that a driver with an unregistered truck was shot and killed close to a police check point on the Ore-Benin Expressway.

"Following the report, we have arrested the team of the police patrol vehicles along that road. They have been detained and subjected to interrogation by the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
"At the conclusion of our investigation, the outcome will be made public. I give you my assurance that whoever is indicted will be brought to justice," Dukumor said.


The police commissioner, who commiserated with the family of the driver, said the command would not leave any stone unturned to unravel the circumstances that led to the incident, and that the culprits would be made to face the law.

He said the command would not tolerate any act of indiscipline from any of its men and officers.
Meanwhile, many commuters were yesterday left stranded for several hours on the Ore-Shagamu expressway, as some youths trooped to the expressway at Kajola area impeding movement of vehicles and people.

The youths were said to be protesting against the killing of a youth who was crushed to death by a truck.
The protesters, who made bonfires on the road, caused apprehension among commuters on both sides of the expressway. The situation became more tensed when hoodlums hijacked the situation to disposes commuters of their belongings.

It was also gathered that the hoodlums forced some commuters to abandon their vehicles and ran into the bush, and while in the bush, some hoodlums broke their the vehicles and stole their belongings while those who could not run from their vehicles were forced to surrender valuables like money, jewelry and mobile phone set.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the incident, said men and officers of the command had been mobilised to control the situation, adding that the situation had been brought under control.
