Division 5 promotion thrills Nigeria

Two cricket coaches on Monday applauded the national team for Nigeria’s promotion to Division 5 at the World Cricket League Division 6 which ended on July 28 in Jersey.

The coaches, Tonye Timimadi of the Rivers Cricket team and Seyi Sonde, an Abeokuta-based coach, told the News Agency of Nigeria on the telephone that the promotion was well-deserved.

Nigeria finished second in the six-nation tournament, after winning four out of five matches.
The host country, Jersey, an Island off the United Kingdom, topped the group after winning all their five matches in the competition which started on July 21.

Timimadi said that the team’s promotion to Division 5 would bring a lot of benefits to Nigeria.
According to him, the promotion would henceforth increase the financial support from the International Cricket Council to the Nigeria Cricket Federation.

“Another benefit of the promotion is that Nigeria will now feature in more international competitions than before, and this will further help in exposing the cricketers to acquire better skills,” Timimadi said.

Sonde, in the same vein, said that he was not only elated about the promotion, but was hopeful that the team would keep getting promotion until they get to Division 1.

He said that he was not expecting the NCF to rest on its oars, but to ensure that the team would continue to get the needed support to improve in their performance.
