Amaechi moves to restrain PDP from victimising him, supporters

Suspecting foul play by the Felix Obuah-led executive council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, the state governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has approached a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt, seeking to restrain the party from evaluating the performance of his administration in the last six years.

It will be recalled that the PDP leadership in the state had vowed to carry out a performance evaluation of elected officials of the party, an exercise believed to be targeted at Governor Amaechi and those in his camp in the state.

To preempt the actions of the Obuah-led executive council of the party however,  Amaechi’s counsel, led by Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), approached the court presided over by Justice Godspower  Aguma, with a view to protecting the governor and his support base in the elected class from victimisation by the party.

Those that the court action seek to protect include Governor Amaechi, his commissioners, Senator Magnus Abe, all local government chairmen in the state and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The governor also sought for a preservative order based on the application for preliminary objection filed by counsel to the defendants for parties to maintain status quo.

When the matter came up on Thursday, Justice Aguma ruled that all parties to the suit should maintain the status quo, pending the determination of motion for preliminary objection filed by counsel to the defendants.

He explained that though whenever there was an issue of jurisdiction in a matter, the court must first decide on it before taking any other decision, none of the parties had the right to take any action that will affect the other.
