Gunmen kidnap 3 corps members in Rivers

Three members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) were early Sunday morning kidnapped by a gang of gunmen from their lodge in Ogonokom Community Secondary School, Abua/Odua Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Sunday Tribune gathered from sources that the corps members; two males and a female, were kidnapped by the gunmen at about 12 midnight. The sources added that the kidnappers terrorised the neighbourhood of the corps members’ lodge as they shot sporadically while their operation lasted.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRP), Angela Agabe, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the command had commenced an aggressive rescue operation for quick release of the victims.

Abduction of corps members is not strange in the state as members of the corps had been kidnapped about four times in the last three years.

A source within the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) secretariat, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said corps members at Ogonokom community had been relocated temporarily to a nearby community for safety.

“They might go back to Ogonokom community when their security is sure,” the source said.

As of press time, Sunday Tribune gathered that there had been no contact yet with relatives and colleagues of the kidnapped corps members.
