12-month-old baby dies in Lagos building collapse

A 12-month-old baby, on Tuesday afternoon, died as a residential three-storey building collapsed around Challenge Bus Stop in Mushin area of Lagos State.
About eight people were also reportedly injured, while others were trapped, before they were rescued by sympathisers, who thronged the scene.
Three of the critically-injured occupants are said to be  siblings.
The building reportedly caved in around 2.00 p.m. with some of the occupants, including children and babies still trapped.

Some of the occupants, who heard the cracking sounds of the building, escaped and were trying to inform others when the building finally began to fall apart.
At the end of the rescue operation, which was later cordinated by the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), eight people were rescued alive and rushed to an unnamed hospital.
Lifeless body of a 12-month-old baby, whose mother had managed to escape death was, however, recovered under the debris of the collapsed building.
Ibrahim Farinloye, the South-West spokesperson for NEMA, confirmed the incident to the Nigerian Tribune, adding that a headcount after the incident indicated that everybody had been evacuated.
