2 British tourists found dead on beach in Thailand

Two British tourists were found battered to death Monday on a beach on a scenic island in southern Thailand that is one of the country's most popular diving destinations.
Police described the two as a 23-year-old woman from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and a 24-year-old man from Jersey, Channel Islands. Their nearly naked bodies were discovered on Koh Tao, a small island in the Gulf of Thailand.

A bloodied hoe was found near the bodies and is believed to have been used as the murder weapon, police Col. Prachum Ruangthong said.

APC hails Fashola transparency on Lagos debt

Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has hailed Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) on his explanation about the status of the state’s debt profile.

It also called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led Federal Government to furnish Nigerians with an account of the status and performance of the financial liabilities it has piled up.

State Publicity Secretary, Joe Igbokwe, in a statement Sunday night, said every Nigerian should be grateful to Fashola and the APC administration in Lagos for utilising the state’s resources to better the lives of the people, noting that while the state was alive to its responsibilities, the Federal Government has abandoned its own.

Taraba Crisis Deepens As Governor Suntai Snubs Deputy At Abuja Airport

Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State yesterday spurned his deputy and acting governor, Garba Umar at the Abuja airport on arrival of the former to Nigeria from overseas treatment.

It was reported that security men attached to Suntai debarred Umar from seeing his boss over claims that he had concluded plans to declare the governor incapacitated following the 2012 air crash that resulted in prolonged hospitalisation abroad.
It was learnt that although Umar had gone to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja around midnight on Saturday to welcome back his boss from his overseas treatment, security men attached to the governor, stopped him from seeing Suntai.

Umar reportedly left the airport in frustration after many unfruitful attempts to meet with Suntai, who was ferried into the country by a chartered private aircraft just before midnight.
On Sunday, the acting governor also made spirited efforts to meet with his boss but was also prevented from seeing him in a private guest house, where he is said to be resting.

A close aide to the governor said that Suntai was angry with Umar for attempting to declare him unfit to resume work by asking the House of Assembly to probe his state of health.

Pistorius free to compete: South Africa Olympic body

The chief executive of South Africa’s Olympic committee says Oscar Pistorius is free to compete in sporting events, even after his conviction for culpable homicide in the shooting death of his girlfriend.

South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee chief executive Tubby Reddy tells The Associated Press that the sports body has no regulations that prevent someone with a criminal record from representing the country. 

Mr. Reddy says “as he stands right now, he is free (to compete).”

Mr. Reddy adds the South African Olympic body would also allow Pistorius to run after his sentence is decided next month as long as competing doesn’t go against the ruling of the judge. 

Pistorius faces years in prison for the killing of Reeva Steenkamp, but there is no minimum sentence and he could receive no jail time.

Arab states offer assistance to U.S. in fight against IS

Several Arab nations have pledged military support, including airstrikes, to assist in the international campaign against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria, according to officials with the U.S. State Department.

The officials, who were not named due to State Department protocol, have been traveling with Secretary of State John Kerry in a week-long trip to consolidate international support for the campaign. They told The New York Times that a series of unnamed Arab countries have made offers to the Iraqi government and United States Central Command to "take more aggressive kinetic action" against IS forces.

United States Central Command, also known as CENTCOM, is tasked with overseeing military operations in the Middle East.
Kerry was in Paris on Sunday, but had already made rounds across countries such as Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt.

A statement by the SFU Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ngozi Isintume-Agu, states that Henry met the American lady on a dating site sometime in January 2013 and they started a friendship which blossomed into an affair. Later Henry made her believe he was a director in an oil and gas company, called Raydeus Synergy Nigeria Ltd and was in a financial crisis. LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling faces possible indefinite suspension

Donald Sterling, the embattled owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, could be suspended indefinitely and fined on Tuesday for allegedly making racist remarks, amid calls from some fellow NBA owners for the league to find a way to kick him out altogether.

The NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, is due to make an announcement at a 2pm news conference in Manhattan about the first findings of the basketball league’s inquiry into a leaked recording of Sterling allegedly asking his mistress to stop bringing black guests to Clippers games.

Silver is believed to have the authority under the NBA’s undisclosed constitution to suspend Sterling – leaving him barred from attending any Clippers games or official functions – and fine him $1m (£600,000) for making a statement “prejudicial or detrimental to the best interests of basketball”.

UN votes unanimously to lift a ban on importing Ivory Coast diamonds

The UN Security Council has voted unanimously to lift a ban on importing rough diamonds from Ivory Coast.

A resolution adopted Tuesday immediately terminates sanctions imposed in 2005 on diamond imports.

The Security Council maintained an arms embargo on the west African nation, with exceptions for the UN peacekeeping mission and disarmament efforts, and a requirement that the Ivorian government get advance UN approval for any arms shipments. It also maintained financial and travel bans.

PDP Praise for Political Leaders Against Terror

The ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) has applauded the nation's political leaders for uniting against terrorism irrespective of differences in party affiliations.

The ruling party in a statement over the weekend signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, described the development as unprecedented in contemporary history.
It added that the development had restored the confidence reposed in the political class to provide leadership direction for the nation.

"In uniting, the political leaders not only rekindled the spirit of oneness among Nigerians but also revived the faith in the Nigerian project which was hitherto threatened by unhealthy dissensions. Our political class has shown their commitment to the unity and greatness of our dear country. Government forces have pushed back the mainly Sunni Muslim rebels seeking to topple President Assad from many of their strongholds around Damascus.

However, residents say the insurgents have stepped up rocket and mortar attacks against the heart of the capital in recent weeks.

Forces loyal to President Assad, whose Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, are also in control of most of Homs.
The attacks targeted Alawite and Shi'ite areas of the two cities.

Kenyan president signs polygamy law

A law allowing men in Kenya to marry as many women as they want was signed into law on Tuesday by President Uhuru Kenyatta, despite criticism from women's groups.

A statement from the presidency confirmed that the bill, which it said "consolidates various laws relating to marriage", had been signed into law.

The bill, which amended existing legislation, was passed by parliament last month to formalise traditional practice regarding marrying more than one person.

"Marriage is the voluntary union of a man and a woman, whether in a monogamous or polygamous union," the presidential statement added.

The initial bill had given a wife the right to veto the husband's choice, but male members of parliament overcame party divisions to push through a text that dropped this clause.

The Nigeria Football Federation has moved to quash allegations of match fixing levelled against it by Singaporean Wilson Raj Perumal in his book.

Perumal who has recently served time in prison for match fixing claimed to have ensured Nigeria's qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa by enticing the Mozambican national team with a promise of $100,000 if they would hold Tunisia to a draw in Maputo and ensure that Nigeria qualified for the competition.

The Black Mambas did better by defefating Tunisia 1-0 while the Super Eagles won 3-2 away in Nairobi against Kenya to reach the first ever World Cup on African soil.

Harrysong -'My mother and father were brother and sister'

Singer Harrysong known now as Mr Songs, recently revealed  that his father and mother are siblings.

In an interview with Yes! magazine, he said he's an only child because his parents split after finding out they were related by blood.

"My father and mother are actually brother and sister. They gave birth to me before they could realize that. It was a big abomination, so they had to separate. Even, they attempted to kill my father in that village but he fled, because in Warri where I come from , it is a taboo. They termed it incest.”

“A group of terrorists operating under the guise of herdsmen from a camp in the outskirt of Wukari have been arrested, while others died after an attack on military check point at Gindin Dorowa, a suburb of Wukari in Taraba State”.

Other members of the group were sighted in the course of air surveillance and later trailed to their camp where they engaged the troops in a battle.

Gunmen kill 50 in fresh attack in Taraba

Unknown gunmen yesterday struck residents of Gidan Aku community on the outskirts Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State killing no fewer than 50 people with many seriously injured.

According to reports, the men who stormed the area with sophisticated weapons allegedly came in from Nassarawa state and attacked the residents while they were sleeping. They set the whole place on fire forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

An eyewitness and also a lawyer in the community, Luka Agbu said no security officer came to their rescue during the attack

"The attackers were very hostile to us and did not spare even children or the aged. The attackers shot at people and burnt houses at the same time without any intervention by the security forces. We are helpless here and we plead with the Federal Government to deploy special troops to rescue us from this unfortunate and deadly attacks. Our people are being killed by gunmen, we are losing property on a daily basis. What kind of a country is this?” Agbu said
